Both within Landmark and now as an independent consultant I have used SoilMate software as part of the NU logic service to interpret soil and plant tests and provide objective and profit focused advice on fertilizer use.

SoilMate is one of the most important decision making programs that I use in my consulting role. I find SoilMate very easy to use, and the amount of knowledge and quality of advice I can impart to clients far exceeds any other nutritional program or information source. Having all your soil and plant testing data in SoilMate allows you to go back to tests at any time during the season, helping you, for example to get a better understanding of tissue test results that have been taken from the same sites in the paddock as the soil tests.

One of the most useful features of SoilMate is the flexibility to objectively modify recommendations as the season plays itself out. This is done utilizing the analyzed soil data, and improving fertilizer decisions based on how the season looks and how the potential yield is looking at any given time. For example at the commencement of the season you may recommend only 30 kg/ha of urea because it is sufficient for 2 t/ha wheat on the basis of the soil test results. But with an exceptional winter/early spring you can revisit SoilMate to assess additional nitrogen requirements and, because you are using accurate soil test information, you can confidently change your fertilizer recommendations.

Reports generated by SoilMate are very easy to read and, depending on the ability of the client to read and understand the data, you can tailor the report and include as much information as you wish.

I highly recommend SoilMate to any consultant who is genuine about improving fertilizer use efficiency and returns for their clients. SoilMate should be a compulsory part of the agronomic consultative process. The support and help provided by the Back Paddock team is sensational. It is great to know that what they tell you is not influenced by a need to sell fertilizer.

As an agronomist I feel that is increasingly important to be exacting with every input to meet a crops requirements. This is more and more critical as we have seen input prices rise substantially, and seasonal certainty is less assured. SoilMate is a great tool to check soil analysis, and tissue analysis of crops, look at trace elements particularly for hidden issues not visible in the crop, and give an accurate professional report to the grower in a quick and timely manner.

Farming is a professional business and we need to make nutrient decisions with as much information as possible. SoilMate allows us to do this with good technical support if I have issues and timely software service over the phone. SoilMate is a solid software platform that I find very easy to use, yet flexible enough to allow me to adjust critical values and comments to take into account local experience and variation.
SoilMate gives me access to hundred of evaluation tables with comprehensive and relevant data that is regularly updated. If I have any questions about the source of the critical values I only have to pick up the phone to get a response, being able to trust the data is relevant and robust saves me time and gives me confidence in my interpretations.

The GrainN plan allows me to examine all steps of the nitrogen budgeting so that I can be confident that the estimate of required nitrogen is suitable to my climate and production system.

Using the product wizard for a fertiliser recommendation saves me a lot of time on the calculator and allows me to compare different blends and fertiliser strategies with ease so that I can find the best value for money option for my clients.

There is a sense of ownership of the data and an ability to store recommendations, comments and build a trend history that makes future interpretations easier and more accurate. The reports are easy to read, look professional and farmer feedback has been very positive.

After working with other software platforms I can say that SoilMate is a step up from the rest and is only improving with time.

I find that with NutriPlanner, once it is set up, is very easy, quick and efficient to log in results. When I have multiple tests it also saves on duplication.

Some of the key areas for me are:
1. The ability to customize the information that I give to the grower.
2. Easy to make up and put custom blends into the program.
3. Easy to input and log key nutrients and inputs.
4. There is a 3 way link between myself, the grower and the report. I am able to have the report and change it whilst talking to the grower. I am not working with a blank sheet or a generated report that I cannot change.
5. The reporting is very flexible and I can choose between the short and long report.
6. Getting an e mail telling me when the lab has received the tests really helps me with my planning.

The support for NutriPlanner has been terrific. Customer service is excellent and the helpdesk always gets back to me. I feel that there is ownership and connection between the helpdesk and the people in the field.

Having the database at hand is really good. I really like the ability to be able to bring up a report whilst talking to my grower instead of having to go through files or spreadsheets. It is easy and quick to access the data.

My clients are all involved in Horticulture and I use NutriPlanner to do both soil testing and plant tissue testing. NutriPlanner makes it easy for both soil and tissue testing, especially tissue testing where I find the horticulture short report quick and easy.
I find that NutriPlanner has really helped with sales as I can value add. The reports and recommendations are clear and this nearly always leads to a sale. The reports show exactly what is happening and I can pinpoint exactly what nutrients are needed. This saves the grower money as we are then just dealing with the nutrients that are needed.

I have been involved in the agriculture industry for a period of 11 years, as an agronomist. I have experience in using all forms of soil testing options available to the consultant and I have found that the Soilmate soil interpretation software is second to none.

Soilmate software provides the individual with a user friendly programme when processing the soil/plant sample. From ordering the appropriate analysis required for each sample, providing freedom to choose between one of three laboratories, this giving the client a truly independent result, which I see as being of high importance when making a recommendation as an agronomist.

The ability to pay and download results from the web insures a time efficient process. When creating the recommendation the ability to allocate the appropriate paddock and interpretation chart is quick and easy. In addition, the flexibility for you to personalise and add your local knowledge and experience to the recommendation is useful tool.

Within the software you can combine a shallow and deep analysis for nitrogen budgeting, also having the capacity for the addition of in-crop tissue test is great benefit. The variety of reports/recommendations that can be generated within the software gives you the option of creating a recommendation that you can cater to your grower’s individual needs.


As independent adviser, I value the back paddock staff and support desk which includes a well respected and experienced team within the soil nutrient advisory industry.
